Andrea is a third-year doctoral student at the University of California Los Angeles studying Social Sciences & Comparative Education. Her research centers humanizing teaching approaches that support student agency through critical literacy within high school social studies classrooms. Prior to beginning her doctoral studies at UCLA, she obtained her undergraduate and masters’ degrees at North Carolina State University (B.S. Middle Grades Education: Language Arts & Social Studies; M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction: New Literacies & Global Learning). Upon receiving her teaching certification, she taught middle and high school social studies, history, English language arts and composition in grades 6-12 (including honors and AP courses) for ten years (in face-to-face, blended learning, and online instructional environments). She is also a National Board Certified Teacher specializing in Adolescence and Young Adulthood: English Language Arts (grades 6-12). Currently, she continues teaching as a teaching assistant at UCLA in writing II courses within the Scandinavian literature and Comparative literature departments to support students as they develop critical stances to literature and create meaning through research-based and analytical literary writing. She plans to work within a postsecondary college of education supporting the next generation of k-12 literacy and history/social studies teachers.
